Tony is absolutely right with his answer, but I was looking a bit more for the specific people or groups that Satan uses.

Constantine...maybe.
Spanish Inquisition...another good choice.
How about the KKK?
How about the whole church during the Holocaust?

Any other thoughts?

Christians in every age have done both the most to damage the church and the most to advance God's Kingdom.

From the time the Judaizers tried to force Gentile Christians to be circumsized to present day Christians who read only parts of the scripture and ignore the rest.

I for one can't worry about the speck in my brother and sister's eyes, while I have a log in my own.

Who does damage to the church? I do. I'd like to think I advance the cause of Christ as well.

I'm with Elizabeth- political power and cultural centrality watered down Christianity and invited divided loyalties amongst Christians ever since Constantine.

I disagree wholeheartedly with Emperor Constantine.

If Constantine had not accepted the Christian Faith and Christianized the Roman Empire, how long would the Church have taken to spread through the civilized world? How many pagans throughout the history of the world would be lost if the Christian faith had not been accepted on the known world of that time? How many of us right now would be Godless Pagan without the influence of Constantine.

Leaving aside Satan...

I think that Constantine is the most likely candidate for the same reasons that John Wilks describes.

Although Keith does make an interesting point. Many would be lost without the rapid spread of the Gospel after Constantine.

But then again, were they really saved?
