I returned to the church in my late 20s after a long absence. Back then and into my early 40s, I really dug praise music and would turn my nose up whenever a hymn was played. Now, as I approach the Big 5-0, I've developed a deep appreciation for the classic hymns. Actually, depending on my mood, I can listen to Taize or Petra with equal glee.
Guess I'm eclectic. Some might say I'm schizophrenic.
Traditional Hymns. There is generally more doctrine and christian theology contained in one mainline hymn that most of the contemporary praise music combined. But, my son says I'm a dinosaur.
Thank you all for your answers. I love singing praise songs along with my favorite artists. I've never had them during worship because we have traditional worship services. But I also love "O How I love Jesus" and "Here I Am" and "O For a Thousand Tongues" etc.
I guess I just love it all. I have no idea what taize is though. Can somebody splain?
Gavin, do you know when this new hymnal is coming out?
I didn't know what Taize was, either, until a colleague put me on to it.
Taize is an ecumenical community in France. It has become a mecca lately for youth looking for a simpler, meditative lifestyle. The music form that has come out of the Taize community is similiar to Gregorian chants.
I attend a traditional service church and it's easy to forget how much contemporary praise music deepens my faith. Whenever I attend the occasional praise service at another church, I feel like a man discovering a spring of cold water in the midst of the desert -- and not realizing how thirsty I was until I found it.

Thanks Mark.
Again, good point John.
