There is a whole world of things that we "should" not do and know that we should not do, but we do them anyway.
I personally never work on Sunday. A friend of mine delivers babies for a living. When he has to go to work, he HAS to go to work. But he never schedules a delivery for Sunday.
Most folks today in America have little choice. When you work for the man, you have to do what the man says.
Personally, I think everyone should be off on Sundays. Wait a minute. I have to work every Sunday as a pastor. I take it back. EVERYONE should have to work one Sundays. ha ha.
Actually, I agree with dannyg about the fact that it's hypocritical of us all (including me) to say we shouldn't work on Sundays while we all meet for lunch at the local restaurant. I do have farmers and know how it is in harvesting season. I don't think God frowns upon this if they rest and get their spiritual nourishment some other time. I also don't think we should be phariseeical in that we make it too strict. But we should all take time out to refresh ourselves physically and spiritually. I believe that's what God wants from us.
I work in the electric power industry. It never sleeps. I mean, you do want your lights and sound system in the sanctuary to work on Sundays? Right. I hate having to schedule folks to work on Sunday. The past three years in a row, I have had major utilities with outages and had to force folks to work on Easter Sunday along with myself. I don't like it, but that is the way it is. I personally try not to do heavy work on Sunday. I try not to even cut grass on Sunday. But, sometimes, a project such as that can also be very therapuetic to me(sp?) so, if that is case, is it wrong? Somedays, hammering nails or wiring a light can be very restful to me. That is the purpose of the Sabbath, right. Additionally, I try to treat each and every day of the week as one of the Lord's Days. As I have become more dilligent with this in my Bible reading, continual prayer life, and daily listening to sermons on the radio at lunch, I have noticed that have grown much more in the Christian Faith, than when I simply went to church each Sunday. So my answer is both yes and no. We should submit of the authority and work as required. We should make an active effort to be dilligent in our Christian Walk, even if your only day off is Tuesday. God is Lord of all seven days of the week, not just Sunday.
By this question, I am assuming you are referring to the Biblical idea of the Sabbath. So in this light I wonder just what you might mean by "work"?
I do not think the Sabbath was intended for boating, fishing, hunting, soccer, etc... I think that God was asking us to take time to reflect. So in a round about way we should work on the Sabbath as we reflect on God
Hi Greg...Jesus did and it got him in a heap of trouble...so, how do we model grace on Sunday for the worker and/or the non-worker...just because I choose to be a Sunday non-worker doesn't make me any better or worse than a Sunday Worker...I don't believe God is keeping score along these lines...and I don't believe it bothers God nearly as much as it seems to bother some well intentioned Christians...Remember the Sabbath Day and Keep It Holy (not make it an idol) Holy Rest, Holy Worship, Holy Devotion To God, lived in the experience of God's Grace that is sufficient for each one of us, Sunday-worker or not...thanks for the question...have a grace filled week with time for mini/many Sabbaths...

Good Question Greg,
