How would you explain the Holy Trinity to a child?

I normally use an illustration about water and how it can be ice and how it can become water and also evaporate into gas. Out of the same piece of ice comes three different forms.

I also tell them that this is not a perfect illustration and that we must have faith.

What about you? Ever been approached by a 10 year old wanting to know how God could be Father and Son at the same time?

It's hard enough to get your head around as an adult or a pastor. I think about what Dr. Knick said in seminary, there are just somethings you believe, and understanding comes later. I guess I'd almost explain it a child like that. They are too young to understand the Creeds (Sarah gets them, but she is a genius). I guess you could alwasy go with the family idea, we are all one family, yet different people, and made of the same "stuff" or "subtance" if you wil.
