I have the best mix of both. I am an engineer in a shop with 85 union craftsmen working for/with me. I spend about 60% of my time in the office on paperwork, looking at drawings, etc., and the other 40% of my time out in the shop floor directing the welders, machinists, winders, etc.
Of course, I am not actally doing the manual labor, but I usually hang right there with them when we get in a jam and my people know that I'm not afraid to get dirty to help them if I have to.
I'd say that doing either manual labor or sitting at a desk 100% of the time would be hell for me. I need a mix so that I can keep both my mind and my body sharp.
Danny and Andy, I am not in shape to do much manual labor. I've never had to do a whole lot. Our group will be hanging sheetrock in Biloxi next week, but we have enough that I may be cleaning up after them. But of course, that will probably put me in the hospital for a month. :)
Keith, yeah, you do seem to have the best of both worlds. It's kind of like me as a rural pastor. I spend a good deal of my time in the office, but then can go play on the farms with my parishoners. As a matter of fact, I got to get. I'm supposed to meet some in about 40 minutes. Have a blessed day all of you.

I hung sheetrock on mission trip once, and that's when I realized the Lord had not called me to hang sheetrock.

Become a pastor and you get to do both.
