When my nephew was confirmed, their church showed a pps of the kids growing up at church activities. Was really a cute idea.

Many people are more visual than auditory when it comes to learning, so I think PowerPoint in general is fine. I know my wife and kids get more out of the sermons when there is PowerPoint.
The problem is if the slides get too cute with pictures, graphics and video. Then it becomes a distraction. Some of our song lyrics have moving backgrounds, and I find myself focusing on the video and not the song (though maybe that is just my short attention span at work!).
