Thank you dannyg for your input. Personally, I like the KJV for Psalm 23 and others like that because it is more poetic. I prefer to read and preach from something that all people can understand better though.
I have really taken a liking to the NLT lately because it is not a paraphrase like the old living Bible but is a very readable and understandable translation. The only translation I've actually read that I'm not too fond of is the "Message". I beleive it's too contemporary and misses the meaning of some things. Like for instance, it calls the Roman guards police. I just think something gets lost here. But that's just me.

I like The Message by Eugene Peterson...The New Living Translation...The New Revised Standard Version...why, you ask, well, mainly they are written in English, easy to understand English...thanks for the question...have a God-filled Day...

I'm enjoying The Message because reading familiar passages (that I'm used to reading in the NRSV or NIV)in Eugene Peterson's paraphrase causes me to really THINK about them instead of skimming over them.
I prefer the NASB. I haven't studied the Biblical languages yet, and I'll never be a scholar of them, but people whose judgment I trust have told me that the NASB is the most literal translation available.
