I don't think there is any sin in drinking alcohol and probably no more sin in overindulging in it than in overeating. However, it is difficult to be focused on God and ready for any opportunity to reflect him if we're obsessed with some material or sensual desire as eating, drinking or any other number of things that distract.
Thank you for your answers. And to answer the anonymous question of why do I ask - I ask a multitude of questions to get feedback and to get folks thinking. Some are meant to be off the wall and other more serious. This is a serious debate among some people. I really like Dave and Lisa's positions. I too, think that simply drinking is not a sin. But there are many occasions when it may become one.
And by the way, it's been a long time since I had too much to drink. But I just had lunch and am stuffed. Maybe I should be asking for forgiveness of gluttony.
