Question of the day ??

If you are a preacher, how do you decide on your text for each week? Do you use the lectionary? Why or why not?

I have a friend that is a pastor and everytime I ask him what he's preaching on this Sunday, he tells me that it's not the offertory yet so he doesn't know. :)

Randy, I remember from seminary them teaching us to use the lectionary for the same reason you suggested. We can tend to preach on our favorite themes if not careful.

I begin with the lectionary by reading the scriptures on Monday. I will normally go with it (especially the gospel for no other reason than I'm a gospel preacher - have no problems with others just tend to lean towards gospel lesson usually). I pray about it and sometimes God leads me to another scripture. I find that God leads me to the issues that the churches need most. Often times this is not until Sunday as I'm preaching.

Now all this goes out the window when I'm preaching a sermon series. I love doing series and will do 2-3 a year. Often times it will be advent series and/or lenten series. I did one this past year on the Sermon on the Mount.
