Question of the Day ??
I just learned that I will be at a class in a couple weeks where Leonard Sweet will be speaking. Has anyone heard him speak or read any of his books? If so, what do you think? Should I be excited? Or should I bring a book?

I had Len Sweet as a professor at Drew. And had many of his books assigned to me (in his class and in supervised ministry.) I'll be honest, I think he has some good ideas, but only enough to last for about an hour. After that, everything gets pretty repetitive. So, if you are just hearing him speak, it should be interesting. But if you read his books, you'll notice they all seem very similar.
I think that he was great in the role of Spock. But that In Search Of show was just lame.
I am having to read "Summoned to Lead" and he will be speaking basically all day...in the morning and in the afternoon session as well.
John - glad to have you back. I do agree about the spock role.
I heard him a couple of years ago when he was the keynote speaker for the Association of Presbyterian Church Educators conference.
I enjoyed hearing him very much. He inspired me to start blogging, among other things. He is a very good speaker, but I can see that he is repetitive.
He's a figure in the "emergent church" which I still don't quite get.
Still, you won't need a book!
I read a couple of his books and I agree that they were repetitive. I also found them to be somewhat vague. The Emergent church is generally bad news, theologically speaking, so I would certainly not follow the guy. Might be good to learn more about what he says and how it squares up with Orthodox Christianity. Here's an article about him - http://www.sliceoflaodicea.com/archives/2006/06/leonard_sweet_g.php
Here's a little more about Sweet - http://www.lighthousetrailsresearch.com/leonardsweet.htm
Sorry, I don't think all of the link showed up the first time. Hope this works.

i'd watch out for those lighthouse trails research folks. anyone who wants to call themselves orthodox and not have atleast an understanding of contemplative spiritual practices doesn't understand orthodox christianity and is only claiming that word as some 'old time religion' which old time being within the last century. i think/know the orthodox church would dismiss folks who try to equate the two.
i've read a couple of sweet books years ago. i think they were beyond me when i read them then. wonder what they would do for me now. from what i've heard, he's been doing the talk that comes out now as emergent for so long he's kinda tired of talking about it now.. so i'd be interested to see how that translates.
