Question of the day ??

What difference have you made in this world?

(or put another way)

How would things be different if you were never born?

I don't know how to answer this without thinking about what would be said in my eulogy!
Ignoring that, what comes to mind is that the world would never get to know my children and the love they bring to those in their worlds.

I have three great kids. If I wasn't here, they wouldn't be either.

I love your answers marty and dbmom. These were the ones I expected to get.

As a person without kids of his own, I can't say the same. I may never know the difference I made in people's lives (both positively and negatively). Oh I know some of the things...but I wonder how many lives have been touched by me in my 38 years. I can only hope more to the positive than the negative.

mhGreg- what is this, Christmas-in-July? Sounds like you've watched too many re-runs of It's a Wonderful Life.

Of course, that's my favorite movie of all time, so who am I to talk!

Being 10 yrs further into middle age than you are I've actually given this some thought, and actually have a few good answers. Like you, I come at this having no children. First, I probably started adult life in the hole, as there were times in my teens and early twenties when I could and/or should have helped, but didn't (either out of fear or just plain having no clue what to do).

My choice of profession, in health care, makes a difference every day. Most days are small and incrimental, but every now and again one has a big event which reminds one why one does this for a living. The service activities make up a big component. Giving blood, donating bone marrow, serving on boards of Hope House and CAMP, working on marrow drives, tutoring GED students, church mission trips.

I guess that my hope is that, at my funeral, more than one person could honestly say that the community needed more than one person like Danny.

Thinking about Danny and your responses,Greg,I like to think about all those whom I've touched in some way. I think back to employees who've asked me for advice that I gave without thinking of how it would impact their lives. Often I wonder about them. Then, one day, at a Denny's restaurant our server was one who worked for me years earlier. She told me that the advice I gave her when she was 16 proved to be invaluable to her and her relationship with her mother. I was flabberghasted! We never know what impact we have on those in this world in which we serve. We're just gratified that we could make a difference.

Danny,

You're right, sounds like it's a wonderful life...or maybe a mid-life crisis. But actually I had a small group where our lesson touched on it.

I also like how you put that small incrimental differences are the things that happen most. I wonder how many times, if given the chance, I would see the difference in someone's life that I had no idea of like Marty.

But we also need to remember that those small incrimental negative things we say or moments we have can also make a difference at times. I wonder how many times I've made Christianity or my profession as a pastor look bad because of word said in anger or something I said or done that I shouldn't had. If given the chance, how many would come to me and say you were a hypocrite? Ouch. That hurts.

Of course, to continue the rambling...almost done...promise...we have to also remember we're not perfect. My goal is to do my best to increase those I affect positively and decrease the number of people I affect in the opposite way.

Ok, aside from the obvious (kids), there are lots of things. I won't list them but thanks for reminding me to think of them.

I like that notion of affecting someone in a positive way. Like that a lot and hope to being doing so in this walk with Christ.
