Question of the day ??

The Lord's Supper:
Wafers or Bread? Intinction, shot glasses or sharing the same cup? Wine or Welchs? What's your preference and why?

I'm going to put a bleg asking pretty much the same question. I'm curious to know how other UM's handle communion.

Well this is my feeling. I just love Holy Communion. I feel that we're nearer to Christ at His table than anywhere else this side of Heaven. I like the shot glasses because it brings everyone to the altar where they can pray. I like using the cup for intinction or for drinking directly out of it because we share the cup more in the way Jesus' disciples did.

I hate the wafers. I had a seminary professor who told us we'd go to hell for using them. Now I doubt he truly believed that, especially seeing how we found out later that he believed that there was no hell. And by the way I disagree with both of his revelations and never took him again. But I love the bread because it is broken like Jesus broke the bread. And we are one body just as the bread is one loaf.

I believe the important thing about the Lord's Supper is the attitude in which one comes to receive it. If we will come humbly, truly desiring to repent (or change) from our sinfulness, then Jesus is there to forgive and come into us in a very spiritual way.

I just LOVE the Eucharist!!!

In the love of Christ,
greg

For me, the ideal method would be a common cup of wine, drunk according to the instructions Jesus gave the disciples, and a single loaf of bread -- though I'm not picky whether it's leavened or not. I agree with you, Greg, about the need for altar-time, though, so I'd want the altar open to any who wish to kneel and pray after recieving the elements.

I hate wafers, too -- especially when combined with intinction! Regardless, even with wafers by intinction, eucharist allows me to come to Christ to be transformed and renewed, and that's something extremely special.
