Announcements: next week, thought of the week, BBQ etc.

1) First and foremost, I want to let all ya'll know I will be on vacation next week. This means I won't be around to post my Thoughts or Questions of the Day. I also will get very much behind on the BBQ debate. But alas, rest is more important than the constant bickering of highly educated (though some misguided) individuals. So keep it up...but without me for a week. Maybe you will all be saved by the time I come back and will have see the light. (If you know me, you know what that means!) :)

2) I want to be the first to reach out and say that I feel called by God to love my neighbor. I feel called to pray for those who persecute me (MW). And I have a desire for a peace that would pass all our understandings.

With that in mind, I now make this bold statement. To all you people who think BBQ is actually made of beef (especially Mark Winter who got all this started again), I love you anyway.

Yes, I said it. And I'm not afraid to admit it. I LOVE EVERY SINGLE ONE OF YOU!! God calls us to love our enemies. I can't believe that it should be any different for those whom we disagree with.

So I leave all of us with this thought to ponder next week:

If we can love those we disagree about the trivial things in life with, should we not also love those that we disagree about things that are seemingly more important and close to our hearts. We're not talking about loving enemies. We're talking about loving brothers and sisters. With General Conference and a whole lot of heated debate that's been had over and over again coming up, let us keep this thought in mind.

God bless all my blogger brothers and sisters next week. You are in my prayers, as I hope I am in yours.

Thought / Question of the day !!

As he (Saul) was nearing Damascus on this mission (persecution of the followers of Jesus), a brilliant light from heaven suddenly beamed down up on him! He fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to him, "Saul! Saul! Why are you persecuting me?"

"Who are you, sir?" Saul asked.

And the voice replied, "I am Jesus, the one you are persecuting! Now get up and go into the city, and you will be told what you are to do."
Acts 9:3-5 (NLT)

Two separate thoughts today...or more like two separate questions to ponder:

1) When Saul was persecuting the early believers, he was doing so without even knowing this Jesus that they were following. Question one today is simply, "Do we?" Do we really know the Jesus that we follow, or have we just heard about him? Please don't dismiss this question with a quick "yes, I know him". If the answer is to the positive, you might follow it up with questions like, "Just how well do I know him ?" or "Do I know him as well as he would like?" or "Do I know him as well as I would like?" or "Have I neglected to honestly get to know him as well as I know myself?"

2) Paul persecuted people he really knew nothing much about. He thought he knew that they were misled and that they were causing problems with his organized religion. And this was the basis of his persecution. The question for us today is simply, "Who might we be persecuting...or judging...without really knowing them?"

To clear up a few things

If you're one of those misguided people who chooses beef on my survey below, you'll be guided to a place of redemption. And it is there that this comment was made.

Kansas Girl
"Beef! It's What's For Dinner"
"Eat Beef"

A study in 2004 show that Americans eat an average of 3 hamburgers per week. Not porkburgers---hamburgers.

Steak is the meat of choice ordered in most restaurants.

On our Kansas farm we value beef so much that we are now raising hormone free beef.

To which I decided to clear a few things up. Please note the following:

Kansas Girl,

I'll say it this way. I do NOT dislike beef. As a matter of fact, a good t-bone or ribeye is about my favorite food. I also had a hamburger for lunch today.

This all started last summer with Mark Winter's heretical statement that BBQ was beef instead of pork. BBQ is pork!!!

Beef has it's place (mostly in my tummy) But Bar-b-que is made and enjoyed as pork. Beef just ain't it.

Thought of the Day !!

And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
Colossians 3:17 (NIV)

When we do something in God's/Jesus' name, it means that others know what we're doing is because we belong to Him. Many good deeds are done everyday by people of all faiths and backgrounds. How will people know that your words and deeds are done in the name of the the Lord Jesus?

One way is to make it known that you are a Christian. We are not to boast. But when we're not afraid to bring Jesus into conversations with others, they will begin to get a clue. When we're given praise, we may give a humble reminder that we would be able to do nothing without our Lord and Savior.

What I get from this scripture is that we should be speaking and doing deeds that are Christlike, but that we should also be letting others know why we do them.

Thought of the Day !! / Question of the Day ??

The earth is the LORD's and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it.
Psalms 24:1 (NIV)

Give thanks today for all you have, for all you have is on loan from the Lord. He is the one who created everything. So all you have - your possessions, your talents, your relationships, your body, your soul - is His to share with whom He pleases. They have all been handed over to you for a period that we call a lifetime (except the soul, which is eternal). So the question is this. What will you do with what you've been loaned?

Question of the Day ??

Which blogger will most likely save our planet one day?

Thought of the Day !!

After breakfast Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?" "Yes, Lord," Peter replied, "you know I love you." "Then feed my lambs," Jesus told him.

Jesus repeated the question: "Simon son of John, do you love me?" "Yes, Lord," Peter said, "you know I love you." "Then take care of my sheep," Jesus said.

Once more he asked him, "Simon son of John, do you love me?" Peter was grieved that Jesus asked the question a third time. He said, "Lord, you know everything. You know I love you." Jesus said, "Then feed my sheep.
John 21:15-17 (NLT)

Three times Peter had denied knowing Jesus on that fateful night. Peter had to feel like an utter failure. He was the one who was supposed to be the "Rock". But all he had done was hit rock bottom.

There's a good thing Jesus doesn't have a three strikes and out policy. For Jesus offers Peter the same number of chances to reclaim his love for him as the number of times that Peter failed him. This is a great thing about our God. The number of times we fail is the exact number of times we are offered reconciliation.

Know that no matter how far away you get or how many times you fail your Lord, He's still willing to take you back and forgive you. That is what's so truly amazing about God's grace.

Question of the day ??

If you could be any other blogger for a day, who would it be? And why?

Thought of the Day !!

After breakfast Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?" "Yes, Lord," Peter replied, "you know I love you." "Then feed my lambs," Jesus told him.
John 21:15 (NLT)

According to the Gospel of John this is Peter's third encounter with the Post-Resurrection Jesus. He's sitting on the shore of the Sea of Galilee after a night of fishing where the disciples have caught nothing until Jesus arrives and tells them to cast their nets on the other side. Jesus asks Peter a very important question about his love here. "Do you love me more than these?" But what is the "these" that he's talking about?

Is he pointing to the disciples asking if Peter loves him more than the other disciples do? Is he pointing in their direction asking if Peter loves him more than he loves the other disciples? Or could it be something more?

I believe that Jesus is pointing in the general direction of the boats and the nets and catch of the day. Peter knows fishing. Peter is comfortable as a fisherman. It's familiar to him. It's what he's done all his life. And Jesus is asking if Peter loves him more than the things that he knows, understands or is comfortable doing.

Peter has left this life (the life of a fisherman) once to follow Jesus. Now he's being asked if it's all worth it. If he loves Jesus more than his old life, then he will again be offered the chance to follow him.

What about us? Is there anything in our lives that might be getting higher up on our priority list than our Lord? Are there things that may be inching Jesus out of the role of what's most important in our lives? Jesus asks us the same question that he asked Peter so long ago. Do we love him more than "these"?

Riverfest in Vicksburg

Michelle and I had a good time last night. We proved that though we feel old, we're not quite over the hill yet. We stayed out to 11:30 (yippee).

Actually, it was the first day I allowed myself off in a long time. So we went out to eat last night and then strolled over a few blocks to downtown Vicksburg. There is a yearly event called Riverfest. It's not as big as Memphis in May (which is where I grew up and has tons of big name bands), but it was pretty cool. It was indeed a smaller version of Memphis in May. It's funny because I never really went to the festivities much when I lived in Memphis. But I loved going downtown last night.

It was one street blocked off with three stages a few blocks from each other. Lining the street was food galore. Everything you could think of to be fried or grilled, including alligator. There were a couple of games like the bucking bronco and the bungie thing-a-ma-bob where you jump up and down on a trampoline and use the bungie cords to lift you into the air.

But the highlight of the night was seeing the last country act. I knew I would enjoy hearing Blake Shelton, but couldn't remember all the songs he sang. He put on a great show and I knew several from the radio. He also played "Brown eyed girl", a Jimmy Buffet song, an old Eddie Rabbit song, the theme from Smokey and the Bandit and "Lonely Women make good lovers".

It was great. I hadn't been to a concert in a long time. When I was a kid, I went to all of them...well, all the Heavy Metal ones anyway...Ha Ha!!

We're going back again today. Today there will be a flea market and arts and crafts show. All the stores will be open during the day with sidewalk sales as well. I will enjoy the day walking around our small downtown holding the hand of the woman I still love after 12 1/2 years. And then next week...well lets just say we'll be eating chicken noodle soup everyday for we will have spent all our money! :)

Hope your weekend is filled with as much joy as mine has and hopefully will continue to have.

greg

Question of the Day ??

What is the most immediate threat to our society today?

Thought of the Day !!

[God says,] "Have you comprehended the vast expanses of the earth? Tell me, if you know all this. What is the way to the abode of light? And where does darkness reside? Can you take them to their places?"
Job 38:18-20 (NIV)

Job has asked God, "Why am I suffering?" How many of us have done the exact same thing? Or maybe you felt that you were not supposed to ask because that might mean your faith wasn't as strong as you thought?

It's OK to ask God. Job did. And Job, though he suffered for a season, was a blessed man whom God loved. But what it all boils down to is this. There are things that we just don't understand. Just as we don't know the "way to the abode of light" or "where darkness resides", we don't always have a clear cut answer for our sufferings. The one thing that we can know is that God does know and God does care. He will see us through the times of suffering. He saw Job through his, and He'll see us through ours.

I don't know it all and will be the first to admit that. Something my pastor, John Sudduth, taught me when I went into the ministry was that sometimes the most important three words I can utter will be "I don't know".

But I do know that Christ loves you and so do I.

Question of the Day ??

How many souls are lost because we, as the Church, are too busy fighting within our selves to reach out to them?

Thought of the Day !!

I would like to say that I am sorry for the seemingly lack of "Thoughts" lately. I am trying a new schedule out. I'm trying to go to the YMCA every morning before work. I am struggling with high blood sugar and need to exercise regularly. I don't eat as well as I should and don't exercise as I should. I am trying to do better in both areas, but both are hard for me. Please keep me in your prayers. And know that I will settle into a routine where I will be doing the Thoughts at the same time again and every day. I just don't know when I will be doing them. Thanks for your patience.

If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.
Romans 12:18 (NIV)

What do you think this might mean for you? Are there angry people in your life that you'd like to respond in kind? Does revenge ever enter your mind...even a slight a case? Do you ever want to treat others as they treat you instead of as you would like for them to treat you (Golden Rule)?

When Jesus told his disciples that he was going to leave them with his peace, it was a peace that passes all understanding (Paul's words). It was a peace that went beyond the absence of conflict. It was the ability to live joyfully even in the presence of conflict.

Can we live at peace in a world where people will try to take advantage of us and it seems that everyone wants something? Can we live at peace with those who hate us or even might want to do us harm? Can we live at peace with people who don't care about us?

We can if we ask and allow Jesus to give us His Peace. This truly is the peace that passes all understanding. It can get us through anything because it never promises us a rose garden. It promises to strengthen, sustain and never leave our side. That peace is Jesus through the power of the Holy Spirit.

May the peace of Jesus be with you today.

Question of the day ??

How might we attempt to privatize God (or our relationship with God)?

*for example my answer might be:

We do so when we take Him and make Him private to the USA. People can come to believe that they are Christians because they're Americans. Many believe that God is an American God and that if they're good American citizens, then they're good Christians. God is therefore private to Americans and those who conform.

On a personal level, we may privatize God when we won't share our faith with others. "My faith is my business and mine alone. It's nobody else's business."

Join in the conversation and lets see where it goes. You may comment on my answers or come up with your own.

Thought of the Day !!

And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another--and all the more as you see the Day approaching.
Hebrews 10:24,25

"God is PERSONAL, but never private." --- Jim Wallis, God's Politics

We come to a personal relationship with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ when, as John Wesley put it, God's Spirit comes together with ours. When we pray, we can be very personal with God. He hears and sees everything about us. There is no other more personal relationship to be had. But our relationship with God is never meant to be private.

Our culture has privatized faith. Society teaches individualism in everything, and so we are taught that our relationship is a private one and our faith is nobody's business. We have a hard time with accountability because we believe that others shouldn't be allowed to tell us how to believe or live out our beliefs. But faith is, and always has been public. Jesus may have gone to the mountains to pray in private, but he came back down to share his ministry in public. And so we must do the same. Every week we make a public profession on Sunday mornings (or whenever you go to church) to our faith by meeting together in a public place. But true faith lasts much more than one or two hours a week. Make your faith...your ministry...your Lord public. Share these everywhere you go and "spur one another on toward love and good deeds".

Question of the day ??

What is the most important thing that God wants out of you?

Thought of the Day !!

When doubts filled my mind, your comfort gave me renewed hope and cheer.
Psalms 94:19 (NLT)

I personally think that we all have doubts at some point in our lives (possibly many points). It may be a doubt about the existence of God. Or it may be doubting our own ability to do something. Possibly the doubt is whether or not someone can pull through. And often times we doubt others.

When doubt begins to take control of your mind, what do you do? Do you let depression set in? Are you a take charge kind of person who tries to alleviate the doubts by your own power (for instance, doing something you doubt someone else can or will do)? Or do you turn to God to find your peace in anxious and overwhelming situations?

Is there anything in your life that's causing turmoil now? Do you think there will be in the future? God wants you to know that no matter the burden, He can help you through it. No matter what it is you doubt about life, He already has the answer. Come to Him and let Him renew your hope.

Question of the day ??

What's your favorite type of movies to watch?

Thought of the Day !!

But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.
Isaiah 40:31 (KJV)

If you're ill, weary, or weak, God still has a purpose for you. If you feel like you're at the end of your rope and feel like giving up, Jesus wants you to know that He'll never let go of you. You may not always be given the strength to soar like an eagle, but you'll at least be able to "walk and not faint."

Illustration from "The Guardian"

Several months ago Michelle and I were sitting in the theater watching a movie starring Kevin Costner called “The Guardian”. I remember coming out and saying to Michelle, “Wow. I’ve got an illustration for my Easter sermon.”

The movie is about a Coast Guard rescue diver named Ben Randle, played by Costner. He’s one of the one’s that are brought out when the sea capsizes boats. They fly him in a helicopter to the site, and he jumps into the water while a basket is lowered for him to place survivors in.

After a sequence of events he’s been assigned to teach others to be rescue divers. And this is where he meets Fischer, a student of his who breaks all his records. One day when bragging about this, someone else points out that there’s one record that he’ll never break.

There was a medical ship that caught on fire. People were burning in their beds. And Randle got all of them out except one when the ship started to go down, sinking into the sea. He reaches out and grabs the last guy by the fingertips. As they are being lifted up, the wench breaks, and they’re stuck.

He looked at the guy and said to him, “I won’t let go.”

It was a twenty minute trip to safety, but Randle never let go. He dislocated his shoulder and tore every tendon in his hand. But he never let go.

Well, to fast forward to the end of the movie, we see that Fischer has graduated and is stationed up on the Bering Strait. He’s sent out to rescue what looks to be a commercial fishing boat. He gets the crew to safety, but is told that the captain is still below deck and that he’s pinned down. Not willing to leave the captain, he goes in after him.

As he goes below, a wave crashes and the door shuts behind him and becomes jammed. He’s trapped. The captain lives for a short time, but soon succumbs when he’s hit with some debris. And Fischer is there all alone…just waiting to die…or to be rescued.

Randle is then called on to go and rescue his former student. Randle is lowered down to the boat and goes inside to find Fischer and brings him out. They hook onto the cable and are lifted out. But halfway up the cable starts unraveling. Randle begins to unhook himself because he knows that the cable won’t take the weight of the two of them. Fischer screams to him, asking what he’s doing. But Randle just unhooks and begins to fall.

Now you’d think that he would simply fall into the ocean. But in true Hollywood fashion, Fischer reaches out and grabs his arm, reminiscent of the story he was told about his mentor. And just like the story, his arm slides until he’s got Randle’s fingertips.

He yells out, “I won’t let go.” And Randle responds, “I know.”

So Randle reaches up and unties his glove so that his hand will slip right out. It was about an 80-90 feet drop. And at that distance, it would be like falling on concrete.

As the movie is coming to an end, you hear Fischer’s voice saying that there was a huge search and rescue effort the next day, but the body was never found. It’s said that Randle survived and is on some beach fishing today. But Fischer says he found out the truth a couple weeks later.

He was rescuing a single man when the man claimed that someone else was there helping him. He said that the other person told him that he’d hold on till help arrived and that he’d never let go.

There’s a legend of a man who lives beneath the sea. He’s called a fisher of men…a last hope for all those who’ve been left behind. He's called "the Guardian".

There’s another legend…of another man who’s called a fisher of men...the true hope for those who’ve been left behind. This man doesn’t live under the sea. He lives in the hearts of all who’ve invited him to come. He's called by different names; Savior, Messiah, Christ, King, Lord. I just call Him Jesus.

Jesus came to save us. And for those who are willing to be saved, He’ll never let go. On Good Friday we remembered his death. But even that couldn’t stop him. He still tells us that if we’ll come to him everything will be alright. And he’ll never let go.

Question of the Day ??

What was best about your Easter Sunday?

Thought of the Day !!

While Jesus was having dinner at Matthew's house, many tax collectors and "sinners" came and ate with him and his disciples. When the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, "Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and 'sinners'?"

On hearing this, Jesus said, "It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. But go and learn what this means: 'I desire mercy, not sacrifice.' For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners."

Matthew 9:10-13 (NIV)

The Pharisees wouldn't have anything to do with those who had sinned. Jesus would.

The Pharisees cared more about law than love and grace. Jesus didn't.

The Pharisees condemned people for where they were at in their lives. Jesus showed mercy by calling the people lost in sin to come to him.

Which will we be more like?

Good Friday Thought

Easter without the cross would just be another Sunday.

Yet the death of Good Friday without the Resurrection of Easter would be lost hope.

God chose to give us both to show his love (Friday) and His power (Sunday).

Thought of the Day !!

At noon, darkness fell across the whole land until three o'clock. At about three o'clock, Jesus called out with a loud voice, "Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?" which means, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" Some of the bystanders misunderstood and thought he was calling for the prophet Elijah. One of them ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, holding it up to him on a stick so he could drink. But the rest said, "Leave him alone. Let's see whether Elijah will come and save him." Then Jesus shouted out again, and he gave up his spirit. At that moment the curtain in the Temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. The earth shook, rocks split apart, and tombs opened. The bodies of many godly men and women who had died were raised from the dead after Jesus' resurrection. They left the cemetery, went into the holy city of Jerusalem, and appeared to many people. The Roman officer and the other soldiers at the crucifixion were terrified by the earthquake and all that had happened. They said, "Truly, this was the Son of God!"
Matthew 27:45-54 (NLT)

Matthew makes a very important observation here. He writes that Jesus gave up his own spirit. No one could do any of this to him unless he allowed it to happen. I believe He did this so that we would know that there was a way out. And that that way out is Jesus.

God wants us to know that we don't have to try to do it on our own. And He wants us to know how much He loves us. We see this in the sacrifice that He made.

There is no possibility for us to be perfect by the law. So God made it much simpler. All we have to do now is believe in Jesus and make him the Lord of our life. This means doing what he commanded us to do.

So why did he do it? Basically, He did it because He loves you and me.

Question of the Day ??

How many people do you think you will see in your church Sunday that you haven't seen since last Easter...or at least last Christmas Eve?

Thought of the Day !!

Last Sunday our choir performed their Easter Cantata. The story of the Passion and Resurrection was told in song. Since today is Maundy Thursday where we remember the night that Jesus shared his last meal with his disciples before his death, I thought the words to one of those songs would be meaningful for us.

My Life, My Death, My Love

Did it seem like the night had come all too fast
or as though it would never arrive,
as Jesus sat down with His dearest friends,
just before He gave up His life?
And though agony waited for Him,
He comforted each one of them.
Like the bread, I offer My body;
like the cup, I pour out My blood.
Share this meal now and forever,
and remember,
My life, My death, My love.

O, it's more than the nails,
the spear in His side, and
the thorns that disfigured his brow.
We think of the weight of bearing our sins
and it's like He says to us now,
I expected the pain of the cross,
but you were worth all it would cost.
Like the bread, I offer My body;
like the cup, I pour out my blood.
Share this meal now and forever,
and remember,
My life, My death, My love.

As we break the bread,
we think of His flesh,
precious and yet despised.
As we pass the cup,
we weep for the blood
that somehow has saved our lives.
We long for the scene to always be clear
and pray that His words grow more dear.
Like the bread, I offer My body;
like the cup, I pour out my blood.
Share this meal now and forever,
and remember,
My life, My death, My love.
My life, My death, My love.

Let us try to wrap our minds around what Jesus was trying to say to the disciples that night. Easter is coming. But we must first go through the pain of the cross. This night was but the beginning of the pain and suffering yet to come.

Thought of the Day !!

The LORD reigns forever; he has established his throne for judgment. He will judge the world in righteousness; he will govern the peoples with justice. The LORD is a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble. Those who know your name will trust in you, for you, LORD, have never forsaken those who seek you.
Psalm 9:7-10

Seek the Lord Jesus in every aspect of your life, for He will not forsake you, just as His Father never forsake Him.

Question of the day ??

Thought of the Day !!

"... I in them and you in me. May they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me."
John 17:23

Unity. Now there's a word I have some trouble with. And this is because we, even as Christians, are so divided. There's Catholics and Protestants. There's numerous denominations. Don't forget conservative thinkers, moderate thinkers and liberal thinkers. Then think of all the things that have been done in the name of God that divide us. Some split over issues like abortion, divorce or homosexuality. Others on how church should be done. While still others part company in their church every time they hear something they don't like from the preacher because they know very well there's another church down the road.

Yes, we are divided in many ways. But Jesus was truly unified with the Father and prayed for the unity of his disciples. I believe he would want this unity to flow down to everyone who has put their faith in him since then as well. As unified people we can let the world know that God loved us so much that He sent His only Son for us. Maybe the reason there are so many who don't believe is that we are so divided. Maybe if we were truly unified, ours would be the fastest growing religion in America instead of Islam (a fact I learned a few years ago and can only assume is still true).

But what others may not see is that we do hold something in common. If you call yourself a Christian...and mean what that says (accepting Christ as your Lord and Savior and being Christ-like), then you share something in common with me and I with you. We love God. We love Jesus. And we know of God's love for us shown in how He sent His Son for us. If only our unity in that fact could be seen as clearly and shouted as loudly as the things that divide us, we'd do a better job of fulfilling the Great Commission (Go and make disciples).

Let us strive to seek more unity in love than division in anger.

Thought of the Day !!

Whoever gives heed to instruction prospers, and blessed is he who trusts in the LORD.
Proverbs 16:20

Have you ever met a know-it-all? You know, someone who thinks that they know everything there is to know about something and nobody can argue with them or convince them otherwise. I'm sure I've been one at times in my life. Maybe you can even recount a time or situation where you were one too.

But the truth is that only the Lord knows it all. Yet still many people go around thinking that their beliefs about God or their denomination's stance or their style of worship, etc. is the only correct way. What we all have to do is remember that we can be wrong from time to time, or that even though we have it right, someone else may also. And so, we should always be willing to learn. Always be willing to open your mind, for you never know when you might actually be wrong.

Of course, we need to be smart too. We shouldn't just believe anything that anybody tells us either. Test the validity of what others say by Scripture, your reason, your experience on the subject and the tradition of the Church.

C.S. Lewis, along with others, claimed that if a belief had not passed the test of time in the Church that it could not be valid. Yet there are many new ways of thinking popping up everyday. So I want to emphasize that I'm not saying that we should merely accept everything, but that we should be open to listening to others and then trusting in God to help us through.
